Natural dyeing with indigo

Explore the ancient process of indigo dyeing with fiber artist and natural dyer Timothy Deliyannides. Experience the magic of green turning to blue as we remove our dyed goods from the vat and the indigo oxidizes in the air. While dyeing, participants will learn about indigo’s rich history as the world’s most important blue dye and its crucial role in the American coverlets found in the McCarl Coverlet Gallery.

Each workshop participant will receive a silk scarf, a cotton handkerchief, and three mini-skeins of wool yarn for the dyepot.  We will learn some simple resist techniques to create patterns on dyed fabric and produce several depths of shade on wool through repeated dyeing and oxidation.

If time allows, participants may bring their own items for the dyepot (up to 8 oz. dry weight; natural fibers only; no synthetics).
